Being productive when you aren’t motivated is difficult. Sometimes all you need to get that motivation is a little bit of structure for your day. With the 1-3-5 Rule, you will be able to better prioritize things in your day and get started in the right way.

The rule helps in a couple of ways. First, it helps you create a list of what you need to do in a day. Just the act of writing down your list can be helpful in getting you motivated and on track. Second, the 1-3-5 Rule helps you understand the scope of each task and its urgency. These benefits and more that will be covered in this post can be game-changers for your daily productivity!

This post is all about the 1-3-5 Rule and its benefits for your productivity!

How the 1-3-5 Rule Can Increase Productivity

The 1-3-5 Rule is a way to organize your day into 1 major task, 3 medium tasks, and 5 smaller tasks. Here are some of the benefits of the rule:

1. Creating a list can help you prioritize

2. Prevents time wasting

3. Helps keep you motivated

4. Helps improve your future planning

What is the 1-3-5 Rule?

The 1-3-5 Rule can be a game-changer on days when you are struggling to find motivation. It works by helping you determine what tasks to do each day. Basically, you need to think of your day as being filled with 1 major task, 3 medium tasks, and 5 small tasks. By splitting things up like this, you can plan your day much more effectively.

With this rule in place, you will get more done in your day since you will have a set amount of things to do and an understanding of what the time commitment is to complete those things. It is still up to you to have the self-discipline to accomplish your tasks, but you will at least have a framework to do so.

Why is Productivity Important?

At a basic level, productivity is achieving positive results. I know that sounds super vague, and it is, but the definition is correct on a general level. Being productive means being able to get things done. That can be work tasks, cooking at home, exercise, or any other goal that you set and complete.

The reason why productivity is so important is that it really is what defines your day-to-day. If you have good productivity, you will get a lot done and be generally successful. If you have poor productivity you will struggle to get much done at all. Unless you like the sound of tasks piling up and struggling to get things done, you should strive for good productivity.

Not every day will be incredibly productive. There will be days when you have a hard time getting anything done at all even if you are usually a productive person. For better or worse, this is a normal thing, so don’t beat yourself up too much about it. The key is to keep trying to stay on track with being productive and staying motivated!

Benefits of the 1-3-5 Rule

The 1-3-5 Rule has great benefits that will improve your day-to-day productivity. Check them out below!

1. Creating a list can help you prioritize

At its core, the 1-3-5 Rule is basically just a way to create a list for your day. The act of creating a list like this can be very helpful in understanding what needs to get done each day, and then creating a plan to prioritize those things. It is really just important that you know what the important things are and that you have them written down in front of you. It may sound like a little much, but having a list of things really can make a difference.

Once you have that list created, you can more easily make your decisions on what should be divided into your 1-3-5 Rule. From there, you can decide on your prioritization for your week.

2. Prevents time wasting

With the 1-3-5 Rule, you will start getting better at preventing time wasting. The 1-3-5 Rule will help you start to become more organized in your day-to-day because you will have a solid list of what you plan to do for the day. It is still up to you to get those things done, but having the list can set you up for success.

The other way this rule helps you prevent time wasting is by adding in some easier tasks. If you only have major tasks to get done in a day, it can be overwhelming to figure out how to get started. The weight of a big task that needs to get done is sometimes unbearable and can lead to wasting time. By having smaller, easier tasks included you can have more motivation to get those easier tasks done. By doing those easier tasks, you will be more motivated and will get more done, thus, wasting less time.

3. Helps keep you motivated

This is similar to the previous point but using the 1-3-5 Rule can help keep you much more motivated. By including easier tasks in your day-to-day plan, you will be able to keep your motivation up for longer. Being able to check off easy tasks helps you feel better about your own productivity while also keeping you productive!

Having a solid list of what you need to do in a day, week, or longer also is motivating. Just knowing that you have a plan and are able to accomplish the things on your list can be motivating. Give it a try and I know you will agree!

4. Helps improve your future planning

Your ability to do long-term planning will be improved with the 1-3-5 Rule. By creating lists using this rule over and over, you will better understand what you can and cannot do in a day. Your initial 1-3-5 Rule setups may be a bit unrealistic. There definitely will be times when you choose a group of tasks as “medium difficulty” but they might not really fit in there and may take much longer.

Once you get through the initial learning process, you will start to get much better at planning long-term. At that point, it becomes much easier to create and complete your plan.
